In 2017, a working group was established to investigate whether the approaches used by Aurora College could be used to establish a virtual opportunity class provision in areas of rural and remote NSW where there is not currently an opportunity class provision.
The working group developed a rationale for a small-scale pilot for a virtual opportunity class, with schools or groups of schools across rural and remote NSW applying to opt into the pilot.
Phase 1 of the Aurora Opportunity Class Pilot (AOCP) commenced in Semester 2 2018 and concluded at the end of the 2019 school year.
Phase 2 of the program commenced in Semester 2 2019 and concluded at the end of the 2020 school year.
On Friday 28 February 2020, The Minister for Education and Early Childhood, The Hon. Sarah Mitchell, MLC, announced “the NSW Department of Education, through the work of Aurora College, is adopting the ongoing provision of a virtual opportunity class for Years 5 and 6 students across rural and remote NSW.” As of 2021, Aurora College will commence its first fully operational OC provision.
